Coos Bay Speedway Set For Action Packed Campaign Across 3 Event Venues
With an 8 month calendar of events on tap in 2020, there’s no shortage of options for Coos County motorsports enthusiasts this year.
The historic 3/8th’s mile oval returns for its 4th season under the NASCAR sanctioning banner, and 47th overall, bringing back many familiar faces with a few exciting additions for 2020.
Once again, two marquee America’s Mattress Super Late Events highlight the 21 race slate, as the now single day Tidal Wave 50 and Lucas Oil Open Show continue to bring top of the line Late Model racing to Oregon’s coast. The ISCS Sprint Car series returns to the schedule in 2020, as well as the ever popular Western Sprint Tour Speedweek and Iron Giant Street Stock Series.
The Modified and Sport Mod classes get more than a one off appearance in 2020, as they’re set to tackle the speedway during the last 2 events of the season, on top of the special Sunday Gambler event in late June.
The Division 1 Super Late Models are all chasing the $6,500 championship prize this season. With multiple drivers graduating to the class and strong car counts expected, you can bet the action on track will be as fierce as ever.
If you’re a fan of the Sportsman Late Model class, there are some events to mark down on your calendar. The Tri-State Pro Stock Challenge will bring some of the West Coast’s best in the class to Coos Bay for an early season event on April 18th. If you’re looking for more of a local flavor, the Outlaw Pro Stock Association promises the quickest Pro Stock drivers in Southern Oregon will bring a tough challenge to your local favorites.
The 1/8th mile dragstrip continues under the strong NHRA banner this year, bringing back fan favorite events such as July’s Wally Weekend and September’s King of the Track.
The biggest addition to the 2020 drag strip schedule easily has to be the first ever John Berry Classic in early June. The massive event boasts a $5,000 to win prize for each competing division.
Looking at the points race, Leon Williams, Tom Melson, Mike Powell and Tom Jarvis looking to defend championships in their respective classes. Melson in particular is looking to repeat an incredible performance from 2019 that saw him win 7 of the last 10 events after missing the first 3.
Mud racers have plenty to look forward to in 2020 as well, as a 7 event set awaits them this season, capped off with prestigious Oregon State Championship on May 3rd. This event brought record runners and fans last year, and promoter Drake Nelson is expecting an even bigger turnout at this year’s rendition. Mud drags will bookend the 8 month calendar of events, kicking off the year in March and bringing the season to a close in late October.
As with all early year schedule releases, this schedule is tentative and any day, date, event, or class could be moved or removed at any time.
Coos Bay Speedway is located in Coos Bay, OR a short jump off Hwy 101 then two & a half miles east on Hwy 42. The facility currently houses a 3/8-mile NASCAR dirt track, 1/8 mile NHRA drag strip, and hosts yearly Mud Drag events.
